It is a new coronavirus - a member of the coronavirus family who has never been encountered before. Like other coronaviruses, it came from animals. A large number of infected people either worked or frequently shopped at the Huanan seafood wholesale market in the center of Chinese town, which also sold and newly slaughtered live animals. New and disturbing viruses usually come from animal hosts. Ebola and the flu are examples.
What other coronaviruses have they been?
Both Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) are caused by animal-derived coronaviruses. Although Mers is believed to be transmitted to humans from dromedaries, the original hosts for the coronaviruses were probably bats. It is now suspected that the new coronavirus may have originated from bats or snakes, and may then have been transmitted to humans by an intermediate species. In 2002, Sars spread virtually uncontrolled to 37 countries, causing global panic, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing more than 750. Seas seem to be less easily passed from human to human, but have greater lethality, killing 35% of approximately 2,500 people who have been infected.

Coronaviruses were first identified in the 1960s, but we don't know where they come from. They get their name from their crown-like shape. Sometimes, but not often, a coronavirus can infect both animals and humans. Most coronaviruses spread the same way other cold-causing viruses do: through infected people coughing and sneezing, by touching an infected person's hands or face, or by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched.
Almost everyone gets a coronavirus infection at least once in their life, most likely as a young child. In the United States, coronaviruses are more common in the fall and winter, but anyone can come down with a coronavirus infection at any time.
